Prayer for the Tulsa March for Life - Sunday, January 22, 2017

Each One Bears the Face of Jesus Christ

I was asked to give the closing prayer for the annual Tulsa March for Life on Sunday, January 22, 2017. The event was a peaceful, prayerful gathering to affirm the dignity of human life from conception to a natural death as we mark the sad anniversary of the legalization of abortion in the United States. Ecumenical in nature, the march welcomes all people of good will, regardless of their religious beliefs.

The prayer I offered was inspired in part by pro-life statements by Pope Francis.

Prayer for the Tulsa March for Life - Sunday, January 22, 2017

Almighty God, we praise you for the works of your hands. We praise you for the gift of human life, for all life has value beyond measure, including the weakest and the most vulnerable. Whether it be the life of the sick, the old, the poor, or the unborn, each is a masterpiece of your of creative hand. Each one is made in your image. Each one bears the face of Jesus Christ. Each one has an eternal soul. Each one is deserving of our reverence and respect.

Give us, we pray O Lord, the courage to proclaim, protect and respect the dignity and value of all life, both the born and the unborn. Give us the courage to do so with love in the face of opposition, insults and indifference.

Give us, we pray O Lord, the wisdom to promote the dignity and value of all life. With patience may we persuade our fellow citizens to the truth that the first human right is the right to life.

Give us, we pray O Lord, the compassion to embrace with you mercy and forgiveness those who do not reverence your gift of life. With conviction may we pray for the conversion of hearts. With your Divine Mercy may we touch the hearts of the women and men wounded when your gift of life is not reverenced and respected.

Give us, we pray O Lord, your forgiveness for the times we have not been grateful for your gift of life and when we have not respected it in others. With hope may we work to build up a true cultural of life within our families, our places of worship, our work places, our schools, our communities and within our nation.

Almighty God, we praise you for the gift of human life. With your help may we care for the sick, comfort the old, guide the young, give aid to the poor and protect the unborn. To all people give the fullness of our Truth. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen

Thank you Fr. Brooks, it is because of your homilies and prayers like the one at the March for Life and the Holy Spirit that I am becoming more aware of what truly means to be pro-life. God bless you Father.
